SJP to the rescue!

Oh my, I'm in love with this look.

Glamour was asking its readers today if the ensemble Sarah Jessica Parker wore to the premiere of her new flick "I Don't Know How She Does It" is a DO or a Don't. And I say wholeheartedly, "DO!"

She looks like a sexy superhero! A couture fashion goddess! Now, I'll admit, no mere mortal could pull off this daring Giambattista Valli gown and matching cape-- in fire engine red, no less. But I applaud a little risk on the red carpet. Movie openings, galas-- that's the time for celebrities (and wanna-be's with an invite) to have fun with fashion, not to play it safe. And yet, I'm often let down by lackluster looks that are in desperate need of a shot of attitude.

Luckily, we can count on a certain crimson-clad, cape-draped superwoman to spice things up.

How does she do it? :)

So tell me, what do you think of SJP's look? Fierce and fabulous, or fashion overkill? As a die-hard "Sex and the City" fan-- I'm watching first season TV reruns as I type-- I am firmly in the SJP-can-do-no-wrong camp, but I'd love to hear what you think!

xoxo,

Happy Friday + Happy Feet

Who knew new shoes could make a gal so darn happy?

Well, I guess Miss Carrie Bradshaw knew.

Yep, she had her priorities in order, and shoes (almost always) were at the top of the list.

When it came to saving money for rent or buying a new pair of shoes, shoes won, hands down.

When prepping to take Mr. Big out on the town for his last night in New York, what did Carrie have to have? Shoes. (Pink, ruffly and gorgeous shoes, if you recall. Hello, lover. That is, until Miranda's water broke.)

And even when getting mugged in the city what did Carrie want to save most of all? Her shoes. (Though she was still left barefoot in a back alley.)

So while they say a diamond is a girl's best friend, shoes come in at a very close second. They always fit and they always look good. What's not to love?

Now, while Carrie's shoe fetish focused on high-end designer heels with hefty price tags-- Manolo Blahnik, Christian Louboutin and Jimmy Choo-- I say there's no reason a girl can't get that same high from slipping on a pair of cute, cheap shoes. That's why I was absolutely giddy last Sunday when I bought three new pairs of shoes for the price of one pair I was contemplating purchasing online the night before. The math makes sense: three is much better than one. (Thank you, Target!)

I found an opportunity to wear my new footwear every chance I could get this week.

For my dad's birthday dinner last Saturday I donned my comfy and casual black flats with shiny detailing. For playing catch up with Abby on Sunday I slipped into my tawny, faux suede wedges that have a low heel height that is perfect for a Amazon woman tall girl like me. And to go to the office on Wednesday, I tied on my tan oxfords, which I paired with my new Ruche dress.

I swear, I had a spring in my step this week. And it was all thanks to my new shoes.

Carrie Bradshaw was definitely on to something.

P.S. Happy Friday! I'm going to be heading out soon to check out a summertime Jazz & Blues Concert Series (that I've wanted to go to for awhile now but never have been to) and celebrate the end of the week with a glass of wine. And you know I'm going to wear one of my new shoes! :) What's on your agenda? Whatever you do, I hope you have a wonderful time!

Weekend recap

Ok, ok. I know it is Thursday and you are probably already thinking about what you are going to do this weekend, but I still want to share with you what I did last weekend! (It's the boy's fault. He took some of the pictures I wanted to share on his iPhone because I left my camera at home, and he finally sent them to me today!)

Anyway, I want to share because I'm still sort of amazed at all the things I did Friday through Sunday. Unfortunately, my weekends can be pretty uneventful sometimes so it was such a treat to really get out and make the most of my stress-free days off.

First up: Friday. That night I went out with a group of pals to the North Hollywood location of Big Wangs, a packed sports bar with a juice head (yes, that's a Jersey Shore reference for you) rooster as its mascot, slogans like "Size matters" and "Don't feed the chicks," and large flat screen TVs wherever you looked-- all tuned to, you guessed it, sports. We were there to celebrate a male friend's birthday and I found out I can hang pretty well with the guys. And for those of you who are my Facebook friend, you know that I came to the realization that night that, while I do love the vino, I also am, in fact, a beer-and-wings kind of gal. (My beer of choice was Stella.)

See, Big Wangs' claim to fame, as its name might suggest, is its chicken wings. I ordered nachos-- which were okay but nothing like the ones I had in Vegas-- and the guys took care of ordering the wings. Oh yes, they ordered "the three some." With 50 wings and three pitchers of beer, it can feed far more than 3. My boy wasn't digging the hot hot sauce and the other guys gave him a hard time about it at first, but pretty soon they couldn't stand the heat either. And there I was, the girly-girl I am, chowing down and lapping up the extra sauce with french fries. Classy, I know. All in all, it was a great night. And hey, sports aren't that bad when you've got a glass of beer (and maybe a shot of Patron, too).

On Saturday, I woke up surprisingly early given the previous night's festivities but I didn't get out and about until later in the afternoon. First stop: My bestie's house to pick up my cell phone. I left it at the bar! I told you I had a shot :)

A little while later, I met up with the boy. I had high hopes (no pun intended) of going to a hot air balloon festival in Santa Paula but it didn't quite work out since we had Hazel with us and we were told no dogs allowed! Boo. So we ended up driving back through Fillmore where we stopped at a roadside farmers market. While it may not be as large or glamourous as the ones in Los Angeles, I was super excited because I really have never been to or bought from a farmers market! In between snapping photos (which I'll share more of in my next post) I picked up fruits and veggies.

For $20, I got three pints of strawberries, a bunch of campari tomatoes on the vine, two oranges, one peach, a bag of cherries and a sack of caramels-- obviously the boy's addition to the basket.

Once we got back to the boy's house, I was starving, so we soon left again to go to dinner at La Cocina Bar & Grill, a Mexican restaurant that is a local fave in Santa Clarita. For dessert, we stopped at none other than Baskin Robbins where I got single scoop of pralines 'n' cream in a cone. So good.

On the drive home, between licks, we saw a concert in the park going on. I convinced the boy to stop and we did. Central Park, as they call it, was crawling with families, teens and dogs, and nearly half seemed to be playing a game of catch. My favorite part is when the band performed Cheryl Lynn's "Got to Be Real." It always reminds me of the Sex and the City episode where Carrie is asked to be a runway model and she falls flat on her face. Why? Because at the end of the show, as the credit role, "Got to Be Real" comes on as Carrie sashays into her bathroom... you know the part?

Well, as the band played the song, I sashayed around the park, singing "woo hoo, woo hoo, woo hoo" much to the boy's chagrin.

Now onto Sunday. As is classically us, we got in the car late in the day unsure where to go. And then decided on the Queen Mary in Long Beach. I'd never been so why not? (Well, the ticket price may be one reason, but nevermind about that.) We had a lightning fast lunch so that we could make the 4 o'clock Ghosts and Legends tour. It was so un-scary it was hilarious! And our tour guide was creep-tastic. I couldn't help but laugh at his monotone voice, silly jokes and failed attempts to make us jump, or me, anyway.

Then we explored the ship, though we abandoned the self-guided route and took our own path-- and randomly found an old school telephone booth. Did someone say photo op?

We wrapped up the day with a hour-long pitstop at Ikea-- I bought a new pillow and pair of cute bowls, but my kill joy sidekick talked me out of buying anything else-- and a pass through the Krispy Kreme drive-thru (maple doughnut, yum!).

Oh, and then I made bruschetta with my campari tomatoes at 9 o'clock at night. But more on that later.

So now that I've told you all about my past weekend excursions, tell me, do you have any plans for the weekend up ahead? If you haven't noticed by now, I'm not much of a planner. I kind of just wing it... and see where the wind takes me.

We all love the Sex

This past Saturday night, I finally saw "Sex and the City 2" ... and I loved it! I was happy to see the girls together again and they were just as witty and wonderful as ever. And no doubt fashionable and fierce! This time around there was a little less emotional drama and a lot more fun... though, there still were a few tear-jerker and "oh-my-god, what?!" moments. Despite some not-so-nice comments made by critics, I walked out of the theater very pleased with the flick and I know some of my fellow SATC lovers feel the same way.

Although I had a grand idea of getting a bunch of friends together to go get drinks and see the movie, those plans fell through. One busy, one sick. Most of my local friends aren't even big fans of the series or have never seen it (I know, can you believe that?!). All the girls that I bonded with while watching and falling in love with the show in D.C. (when I had my internship there, junior year of college) live far far away, in Seattle or Boston.

So it ended up being just me and my bestie, Marielle. But we did indulge in two martinis beforehand! A Cosmo for me, of course, and a Raspberry Lemon Drop for her.

Marielle is one of those who has only seen one or two episodes of SATC, so I had to fill her in a bit before the show. But, I have to say, the best part of the night was hearing how much she enjoyed the film. She was literally laughing out loud at certain parts, right along with me. She admitted that she didn't think she was going to like it going in, but she ended up loving it. "Who knew Sex and the City was so funny?" she said. I knew! And now she does, too.

I told her that now I have to catch her up on the whole series and then watch the first film. A little backwards but she's game! Good thing I have that big, beautiful pink folder with every episode from every season, plus a copy of the film on DVD.

And a martini shaker. That's a must when it comes to watching SATC, am I right?

So, did you see the film? What did you think?

Winding down...

TGIF!

It has been one of those weeks. You know the kind I'm talking about. (I have them often, really.) The kind where you feel like you don't even have a second to breathe. I love long weekends just as much as the next girl, or boy for that matter, but in my business they mean trouble. Because I have just as much to do and less time to do it! This week (and last week, even) I would go to bed late and wake up before the sun rise. Not a good feeling, though for some reason it wasn't that hard to do. I guess because the stress of it all was pumping adrenaline through my veins.

So by the time 3 o'clock rolled around yesterday I was feeling much better. My stories were done, the police blotter was sent, my editor's questions were answered... basically, the paper was put to bed. After leaving the police station and running a quick errand for my editor, I decided it was time to treat myself a bit. So I went to Panera Bread Bakery for a late lunch. (Have you ever been? It is sooo good.)

I don't usually enjoy eating alone but yesterday it was quite blissful. After ordering my favorite salad-- the Fuji Apple Chicken salad, hold the onions and Gorgonzola-- I slid into the nearest booth, got comfy and hooked up to Panera's free wi-fi to browse the web for fun (instead of for work).

After my food arrived, I spent the next hour eating slowly, in relative silence, savoring each bite. My shoulders started to relax, my mind started to free up. I was winding down...

Not long after I got home, I crashed. Into my bed, that is. It was only 5 p.m. I snoozed for the next four hours. Man was I tired. Upon waking I decided what better time to catch up on my favorite, guilty pleasure reality shows? (I don't have a TV in my room and since my brother and his friend have a monopoly over the one in the living room, I've missed a lot of good-- and bad-- television since moving home.)

I watched (on my MacBook) highlights and full episodes of both "The Hills" and "The City." Then I followed that up by watching the premiere episode of "Downtown Girls." Have you seen it? I first heard about it the other day, and read that the main "character," Shallon, is a writer for Glamour. (She pens some of the posts for the magazine's sex and relationships blog, Smitten.) Since Glamour is my fave mag, that piqued my interest. I simply had to watch.

My verdict? Hilarious! At first it seemed like maybe the show was trying to be like "Sex and the City," which isn't a bad thing necessarily, but I mean, c'mon! Nothing will ever compare. (Like Carrie, Shallon acts as a narrator, and you see her talking into a web camera and typing an email to pitch a story idea to her editor. And the episode is centered on the girls throwing a "Recycling Your Ex" party. Remember the SATC episode about the very same thing? Also, the premiere ends with the girls having brunch... it's all so strangely familiar.)

The girls research each others' ex-boyfriends.

But my skepticism faded a few minutes later when the show had me laughing out loud. These girls are super funny and already, after one episode, I want to be their friends. If you have some downtime, you can watch the first episode here. (I highly recommend munching on some Goldfish while you're at it.)

A delicious Panera salad and bread (can't forget that French baguette) and a few hours of reality TV? I can't think of a better way to unwind after a long week.

The only thing missing? A glass of wine :)

How do you relax after a stressful week?

P.S. Speaking of "Sex and the City," I am planning on FINALLY seeing SATC 2 this weekend! (I know, I'm such a bad fan to have not seen it yet! I was supposed to go with friends this past Monday but the plans fell apart.)

P.P.S. Sorry I haven't been around your guys' blogs lately! I miss you! I'm hoping to catch up on all my blog reading and commenting this weekend.

Lovely day

Hello, lovers! (Don't I sound so Carrie a la "Sex and the City" when I say that? And can you tell I'm excited for SATC 2 coming out May 28? Yes! Ok, I digress...)

Just wanted to pop in real quick to say hello. It is another busy Wednesday workday around these parts but don't worry, I'll be back soon. I went out Saturday night with some friends for a belated birthday celebration and I'm hoping to share with you some pics once I get them from my bestie, who was the paparazzo for the night.

Till then, I'll leave you with this how-to for a lovely day. Hope you are having one!

xo,

I know you love it

More photos from the SATC sequel!

Do you remember this Christian Dior newsprint dress from Season 3? I do! And it still looks amazing... a testament to the longevity of seriously great style. So cool that they are "reviving" some of the old wardrobe pieces again-- I loved the scene in the first movie when Carrie is modeling all her former fashions before packing them up to move!

The fabulous, fierce foursome. I know it's crazy, but I feel like these girls are my friends and I am so glad to see them back together! But I know you die-hard SATC fans understand.

See more photos here.

So glad the week is coming to an end. Short weeks are definitely not my friend. I've been busy busy busy trying to squeeze a week's worth of work into four days. Despite my lack of sleep and free time, I just had to post these photos so I hope you enjoy. Now, off to the blotter! Hope you are all having a great Thursday!

Just another Manic Monday

Breathe and reboot.

Those are the words that come to mind when I think about today. No, my computer didn't crash like Carrie Bradshaw in SATC (though, I really do need to learn to back up. Eek!). Just a busy day, but not as usual. Lots of deep, calming breaths were needed to battle my stress, partly because today my boyfriend and I signed a lease for a new apartment. And we are moving this weekend! And that is just the start of the craziness.

This is how my day went:
9:30 am: Interview with mall's "credit card bailout" winner.
10:30 am to 11:30: Check out an apartment across town. Nice enough, but no likey the price ($400 deposit + $500 pet deposit + $50/month pet rent!! Hazel is a money pit, I tell ya.).
11:30 am to 12:30 pm: Go back to apartment we found and liked the other day; apply to lease; agree to pay a still-high-but-more-manageable $250 deposit + pet deposit (where is my money going??? I need a raise...).
12:30 pm to 2 pm: Freak out at my to-do list. Talk with editor. Call source for story. Cut them off to run to another interview.
2 pm to 3:30 pm: Interview lab supervisor at wastewater treatment plant and get stuck taking an impromptu (and smelly) tour of the facility.
3:30 pm to 5 pm: Call five other sources for stories but only talk to one; leave messages for the others.
5 pm to 6:30 pm: Decompress (that whole "breathe and reboot" thing), finish an article leftover from last week and write this blog.

The overall theme for the day was that I had too much to do (and too many people to call) and not enough time to do it. Luckily, my editor is compassionate and said he understands if some of my smaller, less-timely stories fall by the wayside due to "outside pressures like moving" (his words). But I really want to get done as much as I can. So this is what I am going to look like tonight, tomorrow, and Wednesday-- which is pretty much how I look all the time, moving or not!

Ah, the beautiful Carrie Bradshaw, aka my idol, aka Sarah Jessica Parker. Kinda looks like me: Hair up, tank top, typing away...  All I need is a New York apartment, better accessories and witty rhetorical questions to pepper my stories with-- oh, wait. Can't really do that when you write for the news section of a small community weekly. Oh well, never mind.

Anyway, it was just another manic Monday I suppose.

It's just another manic Monday
I wish it was Sunday
'Cause that's my fun-day
My I-don't-have-to-run day
It's just another manic Monday

Sorry for the random blog, my mind is a bit like mush, but you understand . . . yes?

Do I get some credit at least for referencing a Bangles song and a Sex and the City episode in the same post?
